Not every boat in North Carolina needs a title — but more do than most owners expect. Here’s exactly when titling is required and what you’ll need to prove ownership.
When a Title Is Required
North Carolina requires a title for:
- Motorized vessels 14 feet or greater in length
- All personal watercraft (PWC), regardless of size
- Any vessel with a lien — lenders require a title as a condition of financing
Motorized vessels under 14 feet don’t require a title unless there’s a lien involved.
Why It Matters
A title is legal proof of ownership. Without one you can’t sell or transfer the vessel in NC, and most lenders won’t approve financing. It works the same way as a car title.
What Documents Prove Ownership
| Source | Required document |
|---|---|
| New vessel from dealer | Notarized MSO, or dealer bill of sale with 12-digit HIN |
| Private individual | Original NC or out-of-state title (notarized), or notarized bill of sale |
| Dealership transfer | Dealer bill of sale with HIN |
Out-of-state titles must be signed over to you by the previous owner before you submit.
How to Apply
Titling and registration are handled together on Form VL-1. See How to Register a Boat in North Carolina for the full submission process.
BoatForms helps you organize the ownership documents needed for a title transfer.
